Balkan Sunflowers has been effectively working with minority groups in Kosovo for the last ten years. In 2008, Balkan Sunflowers launched the Learning Centers Network (LCN). This educational program is now running in four locations near Prishtina, (Fushe Kosova/Kosovo Polje, Gracanica, Plemetina and Shtime).
Each center provides Preschool, Homework Help, Language Club, Peer Tutoring and Community Outreach programs to a total of over 500 children aged between 5 and 12 everyday. The project’s goal is to support the learning of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian children so that they are able to participate on an equal footing with their Serbian and Albanian peers in the school system. Balkan Sunflowers would prefer experienced educators, students of pedagogy, people with knowledge of local languages, people with experience in grassroots community education projects etc. At the same time, anyone who feels they would be able to contribute in a practical and useful way is invited to apply. As a Learning Center Volunteer, you will participate firsthand in the education of children of the community. Depending on your interests and skills, you will be assisting the local staff with their educational programs for the children or even designing some activities yourself. During the summer months when the children are not in school, we have a two-month program meant to keep the children learning through fun and educational games and classes. You will have the option to have independent accommodations or to be immersed in the local culture by staying with a host family, giving you a great opportunity to learn the local language quickly. Power cuts and water shortages in these communities are not uncommon but previous volunteers have found their experiences in the homestay to be rich, enjoyable and valuable. The cost is 400-600 Euro per month depending on the volunteer and their placement. Balkan Sunflowers does not receive money from volunteers for its operations, staff costs, etc. All costs are directly related to you and your work (housing, food, small stipend and optional project funds). We recommend raising funds for the voluntary service rather than paying for oneself. This has a potential for creating stronger connections between communities by sharing what you are doing with others. Applicants must be 21 years or older. We are looking for a minimum commitment of 6 months.
