Balkan Sunflowers has been effectively working with minority groups in Kosovo for the last ten years. In 2008, Balkan Sunflowers launched the Learning Centers Network (LCN). This educational program is now running in four locations near Prishtina (Fushe Kosova/Kosovo Polje, Gracanica, Plementina and Shtime). The Summer Program is an extension of the LCN program and aims to ensure that the children attending the Learning Centers have the opportunity to prepare for and succeed in their next school year. The Summer Program is fun, entertaining and interactive. As a volunteer, you will be accommodated with a host family in one of the four communities. Power cuts and water shortages in these communities are not uncommon but previous volunteers have found their experiences in these communities to be rich, enjoyable and valuable. Throughout the program you will have the opportunity to participate in the education of the children and make strong and lasting friendships! Balkan Sunflowers believes that volunteers - international and local - participating in community life is crucially important to promote the ideals of a caring and open society. Balkan Sunflowers would prefer experienced educators, students of pedagogy, people with knowledge of Albanian or Serbian, and/or people with experience in grassroots community education projects though anyone who feels they would be able to contribute in a practical and useful way is invited to apply for placement. Applicants must be 21 years or older. To cover the cost of food and accommodation with the host family, volunteers need to pay 200 Euro per month (or 400 Euro in total).
