After days of watching the stream of tractors, old Yugo cars, horse carts, and buses heading towards Kosovo, we were on our way. Leaving late in the evening in a hired van, we crossed the frightening mountains into Kosovo as the sun was rising.

Two BSF “veterans” have been accepted to the prestigious American Film Institute (AFI). Casey Cooper-Johnson was a BSF volunteer and Peja coordinator 1999-2001. Sevdije Kastrati participated in Balkan Sunflowers’ first youth video projects in Peja, and worked as a camp counselor in BSF’s Peace Camp Peja.

The UNICEF Office in Kosovo has awarded Balkan Sunflowers a grant to support the Learning Centers Network program and expand activities to include a women’s literacy program in the learning centers in Fushe Kosova/Kosovo Polje and Shtime/Stimlje.

The Great Films that Change Our World project, in cooperation with Kosovo broadcaster TV21, finished its regular broadcasts on May 24. In three phases since 2006, Great Films has broadcast 66 films and 65 panel discussions to a Kosovo-wide audience of tens of thousands each week.

The seventy-two participants in Balkan Sunflowers’ 6-8 March Learning Centers Network gathering ranged in age from 15 to 60, were mostly from Kosovo, but also hailed from Australia, the US, the Netherlands, and Great Britain, had gender diversity, and came from all over Kosovo’s ethnic map, including Albanian, Ashkali, Bosniak, Egyptian, Roma and Serbian (in alphabetic order).

BSF's 54th Kosovo-wide film broadcast (1 March) with partner RTV21 in the "Great Films that Change Our World" program is "Millions", of which Roger Ebert wrote, "a family film of limitless imagination and surprising joy".
