Learning in Albanian: November 2011 PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 November 2011

Katri Hämeenniemi is a volunteer with Balkan Sunflowers through the European Volunteer Service.  She is volunteering at the Fushë Kosova / Kosovo Polje Learning Center. She wrote this piece about her experience.

“Katastrof!” was the spontaneous reaction of my Albanian teacher when I told her that the biggest part of my work is to help children in math in the Albanian language. Catastrophe or not, the two months I’ve spent at the Fushe Kosova / Kosovo Polje Learning Centre have taught me a lot, and my lack of Albanian is not preventing the children from learning either. My inability to discuss in any depth forces me to be creative, working with pictures, pencils, and other objects to solve mathematical problems. The good news is that the connection between math and everyday life stays strong.

Thursday, 27 October 2011
I am 26 years old and I have to admit that I’m used to my independent life. When I first heard that during my volunteer service I would live with a host family, I was actually quite excited.
